A data engineer salary depends on the job’s scope, level, work location, and whether a source measures base pay or total compensation. The national figures above answer the broad search, but a specific offer needs a closer match. In particular, Glassdoor’s $177,000 median total pay for Senior Data Engineers is a title-specific estimate, not a guaranteed senior base salary.

This guide focuses on US employee roles and annual USD amounts before tax. It does not estimate contract rates, pay outside the US, or the financial return on a data engineering degree.

What Counts as a Data Engineer Role?

A Data Engineer builds and operates the systems that ingest, transform, store, and serve trustworthy data. Typical work includes data pipelines, orchestration, warehouse or lake architecture, data modeling, quality checks, performance, and recovery. Robert Half’s role description emphasizes scalable, efficient, secure pipelines and data processing systems.

Titles alone are imperfect. A role centered on dashboards and business analysis may belong to a data analyst benchmark. A role centered on predictive modeling may fit data science. A general software engineer benchmark may include product, infrastructure, or mobile work without the data platform responsibilities above. Compare the actual job description and level before borrowing any pay number. Here, data engineering salary refers to pay for the occupation, not tuition costs or a degree’s return on investment.

If you are preparing for the role as well as researching pay, InterviewCue AI’s Data Engineer mock interview guide covers SQL, pipelines, reliability, and technical communication.

Salary by Experience and Level

The table uses a named source for each figure and labels the measure. PayScale’s entry and mid-career groups are experience bands, while Glassdoor’s Senior group is an explicit job title. They are useful reference points, but they do not form one consistent promotion ladder.

Group and definitionUS annual figurePay measure and data dateWhat the number can tell you
Entry level Data Engineer$80,237Average base salary; PayScale page last updated March 1, 2025; 1,204 profilesAn older entry-level reference. Recheck current local postings before using it for a 2026 offer.
Mid-career Data Engineer$115,731Average base salary; PayScale page last updated July 13, 2026; 1,007 profilesA 2026 experience-group reference, not a universal “Data Engineer II” pay band.
Senior Data Engineer$177,000Median total pay; Glassdoor page checked October 2026A Senior-title reference including additional pay. The cited page does not give a senior median base-salary figure, so none is inferred here.

Data Engineer, all levels in that title group$135,000October 2026
Senior Data Engineer$177,000October 2026

The senior figure is $42,000 higher than the broader Glassdoor title group, a comparison of two medians from one platform. It does not mean every individual gets that raise upon promotion. Glassdoor also lists a $117,000–$172,000 base-pay range for Senior Data Engineers, but that range is not a senior base-pay median and should not be presented as one. A Senior title can cover very different ownership, architecture, on-call, and mentoring duties.

For another entry-level signal, ZipRecruiter estimated $129,716 average annual pay for the US “Data Engineer Entry Level” search on October 9, 2026, using job postings and third-party data. That is much higher than PayScale’s older entry-level base figure. The sources have different samples, periods, and unclear alignment of pay components; the ZipRecruiter figure is not inserted into the base-pay ladder or treated as a new-graduate guarantee.

How Location Changes Pay

Glassdoor city figures reported by Coursera in its September 21, 2026 update provide a consistent median total-pay basis for a few US locations. Coursera attributes them to Glassdoor as of September 2026.

US cityMedian annual total paySource period
San Francisco, CA$185,000September 2026
Seattle, WA$151,000September 2026
New York, NY$149,000September 2026
Austin, TX$135,000September 2026
Columbus, OH$121,000September 2026

These are city-level total-pay estimates, not location-adjustment multipliers for one employer. Differences can reflect company mix, seniority mix, and sample size as well as location. For a remote role, ask which employee work location or pay zone sets the offer band, whether relocation changes it, and whether the posted range spans several locations. “Remote” alone does not establish a single nationwide rate. Compare a remote offer with the employer’s applicable location band and with locally relevant postings, not just the highest city estimate.

Base Salary Versus Total Compensation

Base salary is the contracted recurring salary before tax. Total compensation can add a target or actual bonus and the value of equity that vests during the period. Sources do not all use the term in exactly the same way. A signing bonus is usually a one-time payment and may have a repayment condition, so show first-year cash separately from recurring pay. Benefits can matter greatly, but do not assign them an invented cash value to make two offers look precise.

Hypothetical example, not a salary statistic: Suppose an offer states $140,000 annual base, a target bonus of 10% of base, a four-year equity grant stated at $80,000 with equal annual vesting, and a $15,000 signing bonus paid in year one. The target bonus is $14,000 ($140,000 × 10%); the simplified first-year equity value is $20,000 ($80,000 ÷ 4). Illustrative recurring target compensation is $174,000 ($140,000 + $14,000 + $20,000). Illustrative first-year target compensation is $189,000 after the one-time signing bonus. The bonus is conditional, equity value can change, taxes and vesting terms matter, and year two would not automatically include the signing bonus.

Use the Data to Judge Your Offer

Before calling an offer high or low, line up four facts:

  1. Level and scope: Confirm whether the employer means entry, mid, or Senior and what pipeline ownership, system design, incident response, and mentoring are expected. An experienced candidate entering a narrower role may be paid on that role’s band.
  2. Work location: Confirm the office or remote pay zone and whether the range applies to your actual work address. Use city data only for the city it describes.
  3. Pay basis: Compare annual base to annual base, and total pay to total pay. Separate bonus targets, equity vesting, signing cash, and benefits in the written offer.
  4. Sample date and source: A 2025 PayScale entry-level page and a 2026 Glassdoor total-pay estimate are not observations from the same market snapshot. Current employer postings and the exact range for your level add context.

If the details are missing, ask the recruiter for the level, location band, bonus target, equity vesting schedule, and written range before setting a counteroffer. Frequently Asked Questions

Why do data engineer average salary figures differ?

They may be measuring different things. PayScale’s $100,094 is a 2026 average base salary from its US profiles, while Glassdoor’s $135,000 is a median total-pay estimate for its US Data Engineer title group. ZipRecruiter’s entry-level estimate comes from postings plus third-party inputs. Average versus median, base versus total pay, time, location, title matching, and who supplies the data can each change the number. Choose the source that best matches the offer rather than blending the figures.

How does a Senior Data Engineer salary compare with overall data?

On Glassdoor’s US pages checked October 2026, Senior Data Engineer median total pay is $177,000 versus $135,000 for the broader Data Engineer title group. The $42,000 difference is between platform estimates for different title groups, not a promised promotion increase. The Senior page does not publish a median senior base salary in the visible pay breakdown; compare a senior base offer with an employer band or a clearly labeled senior base benchmark instead.

Treat it as a search for the pay of people who engineer data systems. Check whether a result is for pipeline and platform work, a differently scoped analytics or software role, a contract job, or education costs. Then check US location, level, annual pay component, and source date. A degree ROI article answers a separate question.
